Using the speed chart on the drill presses

The Nova drill presses are very sophisticated. The built in computer controls many functions.

One of the handiest functions is the Speed Guide. This will set the drill speed correctly for the size and type of bit you are using. Proper drill speeds paired with light to medium pressure on the bit will help prevent bit overheating (and damaging the temper of the bit so it cannot retain a sharp edge).

The speed selection is crucial to drilling with larger bits and harder woods. Generally, you must alter (lower) speeds with larger bits and harder wood. The speed chart does this for you.

Using the Speed Chart

  • press “Menu” – speed chart will come up, remember to press the black knob to ‘confirm’
  • choose bit type -turn black knob to fine the type e.g. ‘forstner’, press knob to ‘confirm’.
  • select bit size by turning black knob, press knob to ‘confirm’
  • choose wood type – harder woods will require a lower speed, press knob to confirm
  • speed will then be set according to the preprogrammed bit and wood type
  • the speed may look slow, but it is correct.  Do not set the speed higher than the guide tells you.

Larger bits/harder wood require slower speeds an lesser feed rate

Table 1 – 1 1/8″ to 1 1/4

softwood 1000 rpm
hardwood 250 rpm
acrylic 250 rpm

Table 2 – 1 3/8″ to 2″

softwood 500 rpm
hardwood 250 rpm

These two tables show a very small selection of the preprogrammed speeds. Scroll through the speed guide bits and wood types using the black knob.
