Overview

The Woodworkers of Green Valley Recreation A.K.A. The Woodworkers of Green Valley is a non-profit 501(c)(4) woodworking hobby shop club comprised of over 500, (mostly retired), men and women from all walks of life.  Our club is open to all current members of Green Valley Recreation.  Our goal is to provide a safe, well maintained, organized wood and hobby shop environment where club members may explore the woodworking crafts.

The woodshop occupies approximately 6,000 Sq/Ft of interior floor space and provides a vast array of stationery and hand power tools for member use.  Members, however, must provide their own wood.

Our club is a membership based club with annual dues of $60.00. All perspective members must first complete a 6 hour, (2 hours per day for 3 days), New Member Orientation workshop.  Upon successful completion new members will have access to all of the machinery and tools within the shop for use on their own projects.

History

The Woodworkers of Green Valley was started in early 1972 by a small group of woodworking enthusiasts. During the ensuing years, it has become a very popular organization and has grown to over five hundred members.

Over the years many GVR members and GVR clubs have benefited from the wood shop by having a piece of wood cut or a chair repaired.  Several clubs have had lockers and work benches constructed for their facilities by the wood shop.

The Toy Making Program

Since 1988 the Woodworkers of Green Valley and their volunteers have made toys for children who come from Mexico to be medically treated at St. Andrew's Children’s Clinic in Nogales, Arizona.

The program’s primary service recipient is St. Andrew’s Children’s Clinic in Nogales, Arizona.  Most of the youngsters who benefit from this great program are from Mexico.  The kids travel by bus with their families from as far as six hours away and are treated by generous volunteer doctors and nursing staff for several congenital medical conditions such as hearing and visual problems, clef palates, and birth deformities.

Starting in January of each calendar year, about 55 woodworkers, and about 25 decorators meet weekly to make and decorate about 650 beautiful toys each year. The club also makes toys that are distributed by the Green Valley Fire and by the Salvation Army.

All work is done solely by volunteers.  New volunteers are welcome to join in toy making.  Toy Makers must be members of the Wood Shop.  Decorators are most welcome and need not be wood shop members, however they must be members of Green Valley Recreation.
